Journal — April 2019

Nate and Laura make up Lüna’s mighty little roastery. They both bring years of experinece to their new company, Nate as roaster and Laura as a Green Buyer. “We felt like what was missing [in the coffee industry] was lighter coffees that are unabashedly so. And the idea that playfulness and approachability can exist in branding in tandem with real context behind the coffees that are sold,” Laura explained. “When I began buying green coffee, one of the first questions I asked my peers in the industry was something along the lines of, ‘Is there a set of best practices for buying coffee in any given country so you know beyond a doubt that the producer will be compensated properly for their coffee? Can we be sure they are getting a proper margin?’ Invariably I got a response of, ‘Oh, that’s pretty complicated—to begin to unpack that would be a big undertaking.’ Unsatisfied with that answer, and willing to do the work, I started searching for like-minded people, who weren’t intimidated and genuinely wanted to unpack that question.” So that’s Lüna, changing the coffee industry one coffee at a time, so that it everyone involved is taken care of. Beautiful ingredients don't have to come at the expense of anyone's wellbeing. So make time for a delightful coffee, okay? It’s important.
